Marty Allran Sculptural Ceramics Artist
My fascination with sculpting clay began when I was a small child playing in the red clay banks near my home in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains. Years later I returned to this passion and began creating ceramic sculptures. The movement, colors, and textures that I incorporate into my pieces I attribute to my love of the mountainous high country of my early, formative years and the low country along the Carolina coast, where I now reside.
I enjoy creating large statement pieces, unique vessels, and, occasionally, a sculpture with a hint of whimsy. My creations are one-of-a-kind, hand-built organic pieces that exude fluidity and are flowing in appearance.
My preferred medium is high fire stoneware clay. Each piece begins as a sequence of flat slabs or hand-rolled coils. My shapes are distinctive and my textures are inviting to the touch. My sculptures are often recognized for their highly variegated colors, developed through extensive testing. This meticulous glazing process involves the use of multiple glazes, underglazes, and oxide washes. Often sculptures are re-glazed and re-fired several times to attain the desired colorations.
Proudly, my pieces adorn homes throughout the United States and Canada. My years as an interior designer imbued me with a keen sense of style, and I strive to deliver that style in each piece.
